This one's tuned to avoid it. You get an aggressive growl when you're on the throttle, but at a steady highway cruise it settles down, so you're not stuck with that headache-inducing drone on a long drive. That's what a well-built straight-through muffler does that a cheap glasspack or a straight pipe can't.

On the 3.5L V6, dyno testing shows gains up to +9 horsepower and +10 lb-ft of torque, plus sharper throttle response once the restrictive factory piping is gone. On a naturally aspirated engine it's not a night-and-day power mod — honestly, you're buying it for the sound — but the truck wakes up a little, and because it flows better, some owners pick up a touch of highway mpg (most of us give that right back being a little heavier on the pedal to hear that awesome sound!)

A muffler swap replaces only the muffler — the factory mid-pipe ahead of it and the tailpipe and tip behind it stay put. It's cheaper, but it's a smaller change in sound and it doesn't open up the flow. Our cat-back replaces the whole run from the catalytic converter back — mid-pipe, muffler, and tip — with 3-inch mandrel-bent stainless: bigger diameter for better flow, a deeper tone, and a tip that looks the part.

The stainless matters on a Tacoma. Most of these trucks leave the factory with aluminized mild-steel piping that's known to rust through, especially anywhere the roads get salted. Ours won't — it's built to outlast the truck.
